What sorts of expectations are placed on you? Have got so many of which piled up with time that is seems so overpowering that you could explain to you them in a mad list in your head? Well then pleasant to one of Jamaica Kincaid's famous short stories, " Girl”. In the essay " Girl, ” Jamaica Kincaid portrays the stereotypes and expectations added to women and women of her culture inside the 1950's. The lady uses authoritative tone, format, and progress of considered to show the expected responsibilities of girls and women in the narrator's traditions.

Through the essay the narrator in the essay " Girl, ” uses a lots of examples to demonstrate the anticipations placed on women and girls, in fact the whole essay is mostly examples of this. Probably the most important objectives, it seems, is to make sure a single never may seem like a whore. This seems very important since it is mentioned throughout the essay like to exercise the fact into ones mind. There are many cases, such as, " on Weekends try to walk like a woman and not just like the slut you are so curved on becoming; ”(p. 200). She is showing examples of the expectations such as, walking such as a lady and going to Saturday school. She also puts an emphasis on one of the main points she's trying to communicate, which is not to behave like a slut. It is so significant not to be a slut it really is tied into simple responsibilities such as strolling and gonna Sunday school. She also claims, " this is one way to hem a dress when you see the hem coming down and so to prevent yourself from looking like the slut I know you are so curled on turning into; ”(p. 200). She again is nailing in the stage of girls obligations, in this case as easy as hemming a dress. It really is showing the domestic obligations girls are required to carry out. Again though that ties within an important point to the women from the culture, to make sure you are not a slut.
